Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

How did you meet your target audience?

My target audience was people who are aged 16-24 years old who are particularly interested in the music genre indie. I believe that I have met this target audience by including a model who is of this age and who particularly likes the indie genre as well. My model is 17 years old and I believe that using Alice as my model would allow my target audience who are of this age or around this age to be able to look at my front cover and see that the model is around their age and hopefully be able to connect with her.

From this demographic table, I focused mainly on BC1C2’s as I thought that this is usually what magazine companies focus on and as well as this, I thought that this would allow me to be able to focus my magazine on people who are roughly my age. I managed to focus my magazine on this demographic by making sure that the price of the magazine was a reasonable price so that people who fit into this demographic would be able to afford this price. My price was £3.99 however if I could change this, I would lower the price to maybe £2.00 or £2.50 to make the magazine more easily affordable. When doing my researched, I made my choice on my target audience as I stereotyped these people as students. I made this choice as I am a student myself and believe that it would be easier for me to aim my magazine at people of this age range then people who are a lot older. In addition, when doing my research, I searched to see who NME’s demographic target audience would be and I found that theirs was ABC1’s. This made me think that if I were to use NME as a guideline then I would be able to produce a professional looking magazine but would be able to aim my magazine at BC1C2 so they would be able to afford this magazine. Knowing who my demographic audience were meant that I would be able to base my price around this so that these type of people would be able to afford this price if they wanted to buy the product.

Stereotyping my audience at people aged 16 – 24 years old mean that I would have to base my live gig images and my competition prize around these. For my live gig images, I used photos that I had taken myself from a Jake Bugg concert and a Blossoms concert as these two artists are part of the indie genre and I believe that they base their music on people who are 16 years old and older. For my competition, I thought I would make the prize some tickets to go to an indie festival as I though people who are in this age range would enjoy going to a festival where music is played live from their favourite indie artist.
